Tony Strobl was primarily an illustrator of Disney comics at Western, particularly those in the Duck universe. He began with a Bucky Bug story for Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #100 in 1949 and had a long and impressive career producing Disney comics. Strobl created comic book stories for Western until 1968, and for the Disney Studio Program from 1963 until his retirement in 1987. While he primarily illustrated stories written by others, he also wrote some of his own stories.
Strobl's drawing style is characterized by clean, even, and harmonious lines, with a tendency towards the static. However, it is widely known that Strobl did not ink the comic book pages himself, but only did the pencils. The inkers on Strobl's magnificent pencil layouts were mostly Steve Steere, John Liggera, and Larry Mayer, who were extremely accurate in their work.
It is said that Tony Strobl produced more comic book pages than Carl Barks, but unfortunately, only a fraction of his work has survived. In fact, there may be even less surviving material from Strobl than from the legendary Carl Barks, as Western routinely destroyed the original artwork.
